The Akron Zips are a NCAA Division 1 football team of the Mid-American Football Conference, and have been in existence and in representation of the University of Akron since 1891. The Zips were originally called the Zippers, named oddly after a type of rubber over boot popular in the 1920’s. In 1950 the athletic director shortened the name to the Zips, as it remains today. The Akron Zips is also the nickname for the University of Ohio’s basketball and soccer teams as well.
The Zips home games are played on the campus at the InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field, hosting 27,000 spectators and an extra 3000 overflow capacity located to the south side of the stadium in a grassy field. The arena is located in Akron, Ohio on 302 East Buchtel Avenue.
The Akron Zips have won 2 division titles, and 1 conference championship in 2005 in the Mid-American Football Conference, constituting the first win in the program's history.
