Meet Kris Kristofferson
Kris Kristofferson is an American singer, songwriter, musician and actor hailing from Brownsville, Texas. Kristofferson began songwriting during his time as a pilot flying helicopters. He landed a job sweeping floors at Columbia Recording Studios in Nashville where he met June Carter, asking her to pass along a tape of his material to her husband, country legend Johnny Cash. Cash agreed to record his song “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” in 1969, and later that year Kristofferson was awarded a CMA for Songwriter of the Year. His career was launched then and there, and Kristofferson has not looked back since. Several of his songs were taken to the top of the charts by artists including Roy Drusky, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Stevens and Billy Walker. His song “Me and Bobby McGee” performed by Janis Joplin became a number one hit, remaining in the number one spot for weeks following the singer’s death. Kristofferson’s friendship with Willie Nelson yielded the formation of country supergroup The Highwaymen which consisted of the two country artists plus Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash. He has also enjoyed a wildly successful acting career, known for his starring roles in the Blade triology, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore and Heaven’s Gate. His role in A Star Is Born earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. Kristofferson has been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He has won three Grammy Awards throughout his career, as well as a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 and has recorded a total of 29 albums.
