Rolling Stones Band Line-Up

The Rolling Stones emerged during the era of the British Invasion, introducing a raw, rebellious sound that stood in stark contrast to the polished image of The Beatles. The original lineup featured Brian Jones, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, and Ian Stewart. Their eponymous debut album in 1964 unveiled the Stones' signature blues-infused rock, signaling the advent of a musical revolution.

Over the years, the Stones weathered storms of change, witnessing Brian Jones' departure in 1969 and the arrival of Mick Taylor. In 1975, Ronnie Wood joined the ranks, solidifying the enduring partnership of Jagger and Richards. This resilient lineup propelled the Stones into the pantheon of rock gods.

Band Members:

Mick Jagger (Vocals):

  • Born: July 26, 1943, in Dartford, Kent, England.
  • Known for his charismatic stage presence and distinctive voice, Jagger's dynamic energy has been a driving force for the Stones.

Keith Richards (Guitar):

  • Born: December 18, 1943, in Dartford, Kent, England.
  • Revered for his soulful guitar playing and songwriting prowess, Richards is the rhythmic backbone of the band.

Charlie Watts (Drums):

  • Born: June 2, 1941, in London, England. Died: August 24, 2021
  • Renowned for his steady and unflappable drumming style, Watts was the heartbeat of the Stones since joining in 1963.

Ronnie Wood (Guitar):

  • Born: June 1, 1947, in Hillingdon, London, England.
  • A versatile guitarist, Wood brought a new dimension to the Stones' sound when he joined the band in 1975.

When The Rolling Stones embark on their 2024 tour, it will be with the classic lineup of Mick Jagger (1962-present) on lead vocals, Keith Richards (1962-present) on guitar and backing vocals, and Ronnie Wood  (1975-present) on lead guitar, bass, backing vocals, and pedal steel.

It will be the first tour without longtime percussionist Charlie Watts who died in August 2021.

Richards lamented, “Ever since Charlie’s gone, it’s different. He’s number four. Of course, he’s missed incredibly.” The band is likely to tap Steve Jordan - a personal recommendation from Watts to take over behind the drum kit. Together, the two worked for decades on side projects. Prior to Watts’ passing, he helped the band record two tracks, “Live by the sword” and “Mess it UP” on the “Hackney Diamonds.”

Rolling Stones: Revisiting Previous Tours

The Rolling Stones have been touring for over five decades, and their concerts are known for their electrifying performances and timeless music. Since their first show at the Marquee Club in London in 1962, they have gone on to perform more than 2,000 concerts around the world. Long before Taylor Swift, the Stones were the originators of the arena show – selling out stadiums to tens of thousands and constructing elaborate sets complete with enormous screens and pyrotechnics.

This marked a critical evolution in small, intimate club shows and showcased the enormous potential that bands had to not only sell out stadiums and arenas, but to prove they could play there with theatrics, sound, and a show worthy of the ticket price.

Here's a brief recap of some of their most well-known tours:

  • The Watershed Tour - By the time the Stones toured America in 1969, they began to fill large halls and arenas, such as The Forum in Inglewood, California. They were also using more equipment, including lighting rigs and better sound equipment, than they had used in clubs. The 1969 tour is considered a "great watershed tour" by Mick Jagger because they "started hanging the sound and therefore hanging the lights.” Attributing the birth of arena rock to the Stones 1969 US tour, The Guardian ranked it 19 on their list of the 50 key events in rock music history. Before this tour the loudest sound at large-capacity shows was often the crowd, so the Stones used lighting and sound systems that ensured they could be seen and heard in the biggest arenas. The Guardian commented that their "combination of front-of-house excellence and behind-the-scenes savvy took the business of touring to an entirely new level." The tour culminated in a free concert in San Francisco. Originally planned for the city’s Golden Gate Park, it was shifted to Altamont Speedway and devolved into raucous event with more than 300,000 that was the subject of a documentary.
  • 1972: The Exile on Main St. Tour - In support of their acclaimed album, the Stones embarked on a high-energy tour that showcased their mastery of rock, blues, and soul.
  • The 1975 Tour of the Americas introduced a new lighting director to the arena shows and props gained size and stature – much akin to those you’d see in a Broadway show. These shows introduced gimmicks and tricks and the use of multiple stages.
  • The 1981- 82 Tattoo You Tour - This tour saw the band collaborate with Kazuhide Yamazari, a Japanese designer who helped construct stages used for large stadiums accommodating huge audiences. Stages increased in size to include runways and was the last that preceded the inclusion of large video monitors.
  • Steel Wheels Tour (1989-1990) – This tour marked the band's return to the stage after a three-year hiatus. They performed in North America, Europe, and Japan, and the tour grossed over $300 million.
  • Voodoo Lounge Tour (1994-1995) – The band's first tour without bassist Bill Wyman, the Voodoo Lounge Tour saw the Stones performing in stadiums and arenas across North America, Europe, and Asia. The tour grossed over $300 million.
  • Bridges to Babylon Tour (1997-1998) – The Stones' first tour with new bassist Darryl Jones, the Bridges to Babylon Tour included shows in North America, Europe, and South America. The tour grossed over $274 million.
  • A Bigger Bang Tour (2005-2007) – The band's most recent tour before their upcoming 2024 tour, A Bigger Bang Tour saw the Stones performing in stadiums and arenas across North America, Europe, and Asia. The tour grossed over $558 million, making it the second-highest-grossing tour of all time.
  • 2019: No Filter Tour – Celebrating their 57th year as a band, the Stones embarked on a tour that reinforced their status as musical legends, captivating audiences around the world.

Throughout their previous tours, the Rolling Stones have proven time and time again why they are one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Their electrifying performances and timeless music continue to captivate audiences around the world.

As the Rolling Stones prepare to embark on yet another chapter of their extraordinary journey, fans worldwide eagerly anticipate the chance to witness these living legends grace the stage once again. The Stones' legacy not only serves as a testament to their musical prowess but also stands as a perpetual influence on the very fabric of rock 'n' roll.
