What started out as a small dive bar in a rundown, crime-ridden section of Washington, DC, has become a legendary music venue renowned for hosting burgeoning rock acts including Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Good Charlotte and R.E.M. 9:30 Club opened its doors in 1980, the brainchild of real estate visionary Jon Bowers and his artsy wife Dody DiSanto, and quickly began drawing cutting-edge acts to the space with a capacity of only 200.

In an effort to compete with new, larger venues in the area, 9:30 Club relocated in January 1996 to the former home of Duke Ellington’s Club. This bigger space can accommodate than 1,000 people on any given night and provides visitors with excellent sightlines and pristine sound. It also boasts a stage on wheels that can be moved depending on the crowd size to ensure an intimate experience regardless of attendance.

9:30 Club is all about the music, and it has played host to countless legendary performances. It was ground zero for the flourishing alternative and punk scene Washington D.C., providing a stage for electrifying acts like Fugazi and Bad Brains. The Beastie Boys returned from a five-year hiatus with a show at the club, and Bob Dylan and Tony Bennett have taken its stage.

9:30 Club is easily accessible by car and is conveniently located two blocks from Washington’s Metro. The club runs a parking lot in the vicinity, but it does fill up quickly, and visitors are encouraged to pre-purchase a space. The lot opens one hour before showtime.

Shows at 9:30 Club are general admission and standing room only. The venue offers a selection of food from nachos to cupcakes, and spirits are plentiful throughout the four full bars—but concertgoers who don’t drink can enjoy the coffee-only bar.
