Expect great acoustics and views of the stage when watching a show at the iconic Imperial Theatre. One of many venues owned by the Shubert Organization, the country’s oldest professional theater company, the theater was designed by well-known architect Herbert Krapp. It features recessed ceilings and walls garnished with elaborate floral and geometric motifs. The wide rectangular auditorium provides theatergoers the feeling of being close to the stage and performers.
Since opening in 1923, the Imperial Theatre has hosted some of the greatest and most popular musicals on Broadway. Mary Jane McKane, a musical comedy in three acts, was its inaugural show, and since then, it’s been the home of hit musicals including Annie Get Your Gun, Gypsy, Cabaret and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. The West End musical Billy Elliot, winner of 10 Tony Awards, broke the theater’s box office record when it grossed more than $1.6 million over eight performances. In 2016, Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 opened, starring Josh Groban. The show was nominated in 12 categories for the 2017 Tony Awards.
Doors open 45 minutes before showtime, and visitors are advised to arrive at least 15 minutes before the show starts. There’s a 15-minute intermission, and concession stands are open during this time, with food and beverages available. Without elevators or escalators, the theater is not completely wheelchair accessible, but there is designated wheelchair seating available. The use of cameras, cellphones, recording devices and other electronic devices during the performance is not allowed.
