Detroit Lions 2023 Game Schedule And Tickets

Roaring into 2023 with their hopes up

Expectations are high in Motor City, as the Detroit Lions are hoping to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2016 and end their bad streak.

They think this might be the year, as they have made impactful moves on both sides of the ball in order to achieve that goal, signing versatile cornerback Cam Sutton, productive running back David Montgomery, familiar deep-threat wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr., and physical defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Sutton, with 43 tackles, three interceptions, and 15 pass breakups last season, strengthens the defense. Montgomery will bolster the backfield and Gardner-Johnson, known for his physicality, adds versatility in the secondary. Jones reunites with the team, providing a deep-threat target.

In the draft, the Lions selected players ready to contribute immediately: speedy linebacker Jack Campbell, explosive running back Jahmyr Gibbs, and reliable tight end Sam LaPorta. Campbell led the nation in tackles at Iowa, Gibbs averaged 7.7 yards per carry and scored 16 touchdowns at Georgia Tech, and LaPorta had 49 catches for 642 yards and six touchdowns at Iowa.

Despite losing key players like Jamaal Williams, DJ Chark, DeShon Elliott, and Michael Brockers, the Lions aim to excel offensively with quarterback Jared Goff and a strong offensive line. Their defense, featuring young talent and experienced players, seeks improvement after ranking in last place in yards allowed and 28th in points allowed last season.

The Lions are determined to prove their critics wrong and make a run for the NFC North title. They have the potential to make some noise and roar in 2023, and they are not afraid of any challenge. If they keep the consistency they had at the end of last season, they can definitely clinch a playoff berth and maybe more.

How did the Detroit Lions perform in the 2022 NFL Season?

Although the team just barely missed the playoffs, the second season under head coach Dan Campbell was certainly an improvement from his debut year, where the team had a dismal 3-13-1 record.

The 2022 season featured a remarkable comeback after a negative start of 1–6. The Lions won eight of their last ten games, finishing with a 9–8 record. This was their first winning season since 2017, and a huge improvement from last season. The Lions also dominated their division, winning five of their six games against NFC North rivals. Their only divisional loss was to the Vikings, whom they beat in their other meeting.

The Lions had a chance to make the playoffs in Week 18, but they needed some help from other teams. Unfortunately, their hopes were dashed when the Rams lost to the Seahawks, who clinched the final NFC wild card spot. The Lions had the same record as the Seahawks, but lost the tiebreaker based on their head-to-head matchup in Week 4, which the Seahawks won. However, the Lions still managed to spoil the Packers’ playoff hopes by defeating them in their final game. The Packers also had a 9–8 record but lost the tiebreaker to the Seahawks based on their conference record.

Their offense was much more efficient and explosive than in 2021, thanks to the improved play of Jared Goff, the emergence of Amon-Ra St. Brown, and the addition of DJ Chark Jr. The Lions ranked 3rd in total yards, 4th in passing yards, and 5th in points scored. They also had some impressive wins over playoff teams like the Arizona Cardinals, the Baltimore Ravens, and the Green Bay Packers.

However, their defense was still a major weakness, as they struggled to stop the run and generate consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks. The Lions were the team with the most total yards allowed, and they also gave up 5.2 yards per carry, ranking third from the bottom. They also performed poorly in advanced metrics, as they were 26th in run defense DOVA and 23rd in pass defense DOVA. Their pass rush and run stop were also ineffective, as they won only 36% and 28% of their battles, respectively. However, there was a silver lining in their rookie pass rushers, who combined for 20.5 sacks, setting a new NFL record. Aidan Hutchinson led the way with 9.5 sacks, followed by James Houston with eight.

Detroit Lions Key Matchups in 2023The Lions roar into the 2023 season with a fierce schedule that pits them against some of the best teams in the NFL. They also face their division rivals, the Packers, twice on primetime TV. Here are their most relevant matchups:

  • Week 4 at Green Bay Packers: This is the Lions’ oldest and most bitter rival and the first of two meetings in 2023. The Lions have won three straight games against the Packers, but they have never won four in a row in the history of the rivalry, which now looks possible without Aaron Rodgers at the helm. The Lions will need to pressure their new quarterback, Jordan Love, and contain top targets Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs.
  • Week 8 vs. Las Vegas Raiders: This is the Lions’ first Monday Night Football game in two years. The Raiders are a young and explosive team that finished 6-11 in 2022 and are looking to redeem themselves, now with Jimmy Garoppolo at the helm. The Lions will need to slow down the Raiders’ offense and take advantage of their weak defense.
  • Week 12 vs. Green Bay Packers: This is the Lions’ second meeting with their biggest rival and their traditional Thanksgiving Day game. The Lions have hosted the Packers on Thanksgiving 21 times, more than any other opponent. The last time they faced each other on this holiday was in 2013 when the Lions won 40-10. The Lions will hope to repeat that performance and spoil the Packers’ feast.
  • Week 18 vs. Minnesota Vikings: This is the Lions’ last game of the regular season, and possibly their last chance to make the playoffs or spoil the Vikings’ chances. The Vikings are another divisional rival that has dominated the Lions over the years. The Vikings lead the all-time series 80-41-2, and have won five of the last seven meetings. The Vikings have a balanced offense led by quarterback Kirk Cousins, and an all-world WR in Justin Jefferson. The Lions will need to stop the Vikings’ run game and force Cousins into mistakes.
