The arena opened in October of 1996 after the completion of a $75 million construction project. There are two teams that currently use the Van Andel Arena for home games. They include the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League, and the Grand Rapids Rampage of the Arena Football League. The Grand Rapids Hoops of the Continental Basketball Association also used Van Andel Arena before going under.
For sporting events, the Van Andel Arena can accommodate 10,834 fans. For end stage concerts the capacity increases to 12,858, and for center stage shows 13,184. Additionally, there are 44 luxury suites that add to the overall modern look and feel of the venue.
